Notice STEAM in real play

Recognise the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics within children's questions, movement, making and exploration.

Extend without taking over

Use observation, open-ended resources and carefully chosen interactions to deepen thinking while keeping the child in the lead.

Build a confident team

Develop a shared approach that helps practitioners plan, talk about and evidence STEAM with greater clarity and confidence.

STEAM is already happening in your setting

Children are exploring STEAM when they build a bridge from logs, compare puddles, follow a trail of ants, mix mud, test a ramp, notice a shadow or work out how to move water from one place to another. The learning is already there. The challenge is knowing how to notice it, name it and respond without taking the play away from the child. STEAM in Nature helps you and your team see the thinking inside ordinary moments. You will learn how to create richer opportunities, ask more useful questions and extend children's ideas while protecting curiosity, autonomy and play. This is not a collection of Pinterest activities. It is a way of seeing and supporting the learning already unfolding outdoors.

Meet Rachel and Jodie

We are Rachel and Jodie, co-founders of Where the Wild Ones Learn. Our work brings together child-led pedagogy, nature-connected learning, neurodiversity-affirming practice and the realities of working with children and practitioners. We created STEAM in Nature because STEAM is often made to sound more complicated than it is. We want educators to recognise the rich thinking already present in children's play and feel confident enough to support it without taking it over. Our approach is practical, reflective and rooted in real settings. We will help you look more closely at what children are doing, question easy assumptions and make intentional changes that protect curiosity and belonging.
